Weekly Blog #5 - Population, Urbanization, & Sustainability

The human population seems to have expanded each day. New homes, apartments, offices, and other major architectural developments keep on appearing in major cities like San Jose and Sunnyvale. Additionally, it feels like there are always more people around cities. Though, to be fair, the Bay Area attracts many people in employment and education. The technology industry has increased dramatically and has offered opportunities for people looking for employment in that industry. According to Career Outlook, the technology industry was the fastest-growing industry in 2023 and is set to increase 19.5% by 2033.

Furthermore, another factor that contributes to the rapid growth of the population is migration to urban areas. People move to new cities and countries to find better opportunities or start fresh. As people take advantage of these opportunities, cities would have to expand housing, infrastructure, and transportation to support the increasing population of people in the cities.

Cities have to consider the long-term effects of urban expansion. For instance, traffic, limited spaces, and housing prices can be a challenge when having a large population in a city. Cities must plan a balance between growth and sustainability to prevent an overcrowded population. This can push cities to plan better transportation solutions to commute around the city.
